Plot
The series follows the lives of both the family and the servants in the London townhouse at 165 Eaton Place. Richard Bellamy, the head of the household, is a member of Parliament, and his wife a member of the titled aristocracy. Belowstairs, Hudson, the Scottish butler directs and guides the other servants about their tasks and (sometimes) their proper place. Real-life events from 1903-1930 are incorporated into the stories of the Bellamy household.
Episodes
Disc 01:
1 A Patriotic Offering
The arrival of Belgian refugees causes problems for the household. Edward comes under pressure to enlist in the army.
2 News from the Front
Returning home from the war, James tells of shortage of ammunition. Geoffrey Dillon, now in politics, gives this information to the newspapers, in order to embarrass the government. This lands James in trouble with his commanding officer. James receives a new posting contrary to his wishes. Edward is also on leave from the army. He proposes to Daisy.
3 The Beastly Hun
The bitter anti-German feeling generated by the sinking of the Lusitania causes the Bellamy servants to consider their own feelings when a local tradesman is found to be of German origin. Hazel discovers that Hudson has been spreading scare stories around the servants' hall and displaying an exaggerated hatred of Germans.
Disc 02:
4 Women Shall Not Weep
James is dissatisfied with his posting as a staff officer. Edward and Daisy are married prior to his departure for France. While seeing two officers off at the station, Georgina sees wounded soldiers returning and makes a life-changing decision. Ruby leaves the household to take a job in a munitions factory.
5 Tug of War
James is home on leave and finds the rest of the family busy with war work. He is determined to do everything he can to be posted back to the front. Georgina finds that nursing is more demanding and less glamorous than she imagined. Most of the housework at Eaton Place now falls on Rose and Daisy. Rose pre-empts Daisy to become a part-time bus conductress.
6 Home Fires
The re-appearance of an old flame throws Rose into a state of confusion. . .
