| Mismatched adolescent friends become whole from teaming up in “The Mighty.” A young man stunted by trauma named Max (Elder Henson) lives with grandparents (Harry Dean Stanton, Gena Rowlands) while his father is incarcerated. He is assigned reading tutor named Kevin (Kieran Culkin) who is diminutive and cannot walk properly, owing to a degenerative disease called Morquio’s Syndrome. They connect and become friends, the larger boy carrying the smaller around on his shoulders. They encounter many people (Meat Loaf, Gillian Anderson) in their quest for bonding. Max and Kevin determine what honor and friendship means and find fulfillment with the other. When his jailbird father (James Goldolfini) kidnaps Max, Kevin uses what energy is left in him to help his friend. |
