Lady Marjorie sits for her portrait by Guthrie Scone, an avant-garde painter. Sarah is sent to Scone's studio with some of Lady Marjorie's dresses. A relationship begins which could end in a major scandal.

The Bellamys and their senior servants are away on their summer holidays. The junior servants, left behind on reduced pay to clean the house, indulge in a wild evening of drinking and dressing-up. James returns home in the middle of the festivities.
