Elizabeth is married to Lawrence and lives in Greenwich. However, Lawrence is constantly making excuses to get away from London and habitually comes to bed late, usually after Elizabeth is asleep. Meanwhile, Rose is enjoying the flattering attentions of Thomas Watkins, the new manservant.

After an evening with Sarah at her lodgings, James finds out that she is expecting his child. He makes a confession to his parents, which ultimately shatters the family and alters his own and Sarah's lives.

Your Obedient Servant
Mr Bellamy and Hudson both receive visits from their respective brothers. Neither visit is entirely welcome. Arthur Bellamy is suspicious of Hudson's behaviour and this strains the bonds of trust between servant and master.

Out of the Everywhere
Elizabeth arrives home with her new daughter whose care is entrusted to the elderly Southwold family nanny. Nanny's rigid regime upsets the other servants. Sarah, in her new role as nursery maid, finds Nanny's authority diffcult to bear.

Lady Marjorie's mother, Lady Southwold, is staying at Eaton Place following the funeral of her husband. When a valuable broach belonging to Lady Southwold goes missing Hudson is called on to investigate. Watkins, who has been secretly meeting with another prospective employer, resents Hudson's questioning of his affairs. His plans are further complicated by his increasingly close relationship with Sarah.

While her parents are away, Elizabeth gets involved in the suffragette movement. Rose's attempts to stop her getting into trouble have disastrous results. Elizabeth is forced to seek help from Julius Karekin, a charismatic and influential man whom she has just met.

Elizabeth becomes the mistress of financier Julius Karekin, a man thoroughly disapproved of by both her parents and society at large. When the terms of Lord Southwold's will cause a financial problem for the Bellamies, they are forced to revise their opinion.

When Sarah's pregnacy is discovered, Watkins sees a way to further his own ends by marrying her. However, a furious Lady Marjorie refuses to endorse the agreement between her husband and Watkins. Meanwhile, only Ruby knows who is really the father of Sarah's child.

A Family Gathering
Elisabeth recognises the true nature of her relationship with Julius Karekin. James returns from India with his new fiancee, Phyllis, and announces his intention to leave the army. On account of her own troubles, Elizabeth is, at first, unwelcoming to Phyllis, but soon befriends her. The celebration of James's engagement and Lady Marjorie's birthday are cut short by news of the death of King Edward VII.
